Fluency

Delivering assessment and intervention for adults who stutter.

What is stuttering and how can it impact every-day life?

Stuttering is a fluency disorder that causes interruptions in the flow of speech. There are various types of stuttering interruptions such as:

  • repeated sounds (b-b-b ball)

  • repeated syllables (te-te-te-teddy)

  • prolonged sounds (pleeeeeease play with me)

  • prolonged silent blocks (person trying to speak but no sound is coming out).

  • secondary behaviours (grunts, using filler words, grimacing, blinking, body movements)

There can be common misconceptions, tension or negative responses to people who stutter. This can lead to reduced social participation, mental health, anxiety, and decreased participation in conversation.

How can a Speech Pathologist help?

Our clinicians can help by assessing, treating and managing stuttering disorders with an individualised evidenced based approach for people of all ages.

Our clinicians are trained in the most recognised evidenced based programs:

  • La Trobe Smooth Speech Program | The program teaches clients techniques to help produce 'smooth' speech, decrease the frequency of stuttering to support fluent speech.

  • Camperdown Program | The Camperdown Program is a treatment for adults and adolescents who stutter. The Camperdown Program aims to help clients learn how to control stuttering.
